Gear guide
Choosing a walking pad for your desk
The short version
- For walking while you work, you need 0.5–4 mph, not running speeds.
- Pick one that fits under your desk and is quiet enough for calls.
- Want StepStation to read speed and distance automatically? Get one with Bluetooth FTMS, like WalkingPad (Kingsmith) or UREVO.
What to look for
- 1Speed range. Desk walking happens at about 1.5–3.5 mph. A top speed around 4 mph is plenty unless you also want to run.
- 2Footprint and height. Measure the space under your standing desk. Low-profile pads slide underneath and many fold or roll away after work.
- 3Noise. You'll be on video calls. Look for reviews that mention noise at walking speed, and put a mat underneath to damp vibration.
- 4Weight capacity and deck length. Check the maximum user weight, and choose a longer deck if you have a long stride.
- 5Bluetooth (FTMS). Pads that support the Fitness Machine Service standard can stream speed and distance to StepStation (Pro), so you never type a number. Without it, StepStation's Live Treadmill timer works with any pad.
- 6A standing desk. Your desk needs to rise to elbow height while you stand on the pad (about 1 inch higher than your normal standing height).

- Start at 1.5–2 mph while you type. Speed up on calls and reading.
- Set a modest daily goal in StepStation (3–5 miles) and let the streak build.
- Wear supportive shoes, and take breaks. Walking all day on day one is a recipe for sore feet.
